Wire Stories: A Shocking Lesson in Electrical Safety Evolution
3 of 5
Okay, settle in for this one. In our last post, we talked about Great-Grandad pioneering electrical work in Newfoundland with knob and tube. We mentioned he had a... direct approach. Before we share this particular family legend, let's put up some big, bright, flashing WARNING LIGHTS: Electrical work is dangerous. Safety standards exist for very good reasons. What you're about to read describes extremely unsafe practices from a bygone era and should NEVER, EVER be attempted.
Got it? Good.
The story goes like this: Great-Grandad finishes wiring a section of a house. The homeowner, curious and maybe a bit nervous about this newfangled electricity, asks him, "Is it live then? Is it working?"
Now, today, a licensed electrician would pull out a calibrated multimeter or voltage tester, follow strict safety procedures (like lockout/tagout if necessary), and give a clear, safe confirmation. Great-Grandad, according to legend, had a different method.
He’d apparently say, "Well b'y, let's find out!" He'd then grab the homeowner's hand or arm with one of his. With his other hand, he’d reach out and grab the bare wire he’d just installed.
If it was live? ZZZZZT! The homeowner and Great-Grandad would complete the circuit together, and everyone involved got an instant, unpleasant confirmation. Talk about customer participation!
LET US REPEAT: THIS IS HORRIFYINGLY DANGEROUS AND ABSOLUTELY NOT HOW ANY REPUTABLE ELECTRICIAN OPERATES TODAY.
It’s a wild tale (and maybe a bit exaggerated over the years, who knows?), but it serves a powerful purpose: it starkly illustrates the night-and-day difference between the "Wild West" days of early electricity and the safety-obsessed culture of modern electrical work.
Today, the entire industry is built around preventing shocks, fires, and injuries. We have rigorous Electrical Codes, mandatory safety training, specialized testing equipment, grounding, GFCI and AFCI protection, insulated tools, personal protective equipment (PPE)... the list goes on. At Vinland Solas, safety isn't just a rule; it's our absolute top priority on every single job site. We follow strict protocols to protect ourselves, our clients, and their property.
That shocking "testing" method belongs firmly in the history books as a cautionary tale!
Next time: While that method is long gone, Great-Grandad's actual wiring often isn't. We'll explore what it's like for us, generations later, to encounter his handiwork hidden in the walls and ceilings of Newfoundland homes.
